like, rick keeps trying to find a way to rebuild the world he went out in, in some small way; he wants to close off hershel’s farm or hole up in the cdc or find a safe place with lori to raise carl away from the horrors of the world

but this will NEVER HAPPEN, everyone else knows this.  there is no place that is safe, the world as it is is a world in which your only option is to fight, always, constantly, to burn everything down until the danger is cleared.  there is no hiding.  

and SHANE knows this, having been in the world as the rules broke down and being shane, who has never been able to live within structure.  shane knows you have to fight, that they aren’t people, that you have to destroy as much as possible if you want to stay safe because there is no safe outside of becoming an agent of destruction, that the entire purpose of zombies as a villain is that they are implacable and undying and eternal and the only way to make your world safe is to destroy them.  rick thinks they can clear a small place for themselves but as everyone in the world slowly becomes an undying emblem and agent of decay there is nowhere they will not find.  and so shane is a better leader than rick, because rick’s hopeful delusions put everyone in the group in danger consistently (including rick and lori and carl, the people shane loves more than anything in the universe)

but in being an embodiment of entropic destruction shane is a wild dog that will destroy the things he loves more quickly than the things he doesn’t, because the closer you get to a destructive force the easier it is for it to destroy you.  and the fact that rick is making bad choices, that he has the life shane wants, that he has swanned in after three months and thinks he can run a postapocalyptic society, that he is taking the only thing shane has ever been objectively good at, objectively better than shane at, switches on his green-eyed monster

it’s not that he doesn’t love rick and lori and carl, it’s that he loves them more than ever, and rick is going to get them all killed

and in this new world when something is going to get you killed, you destroy it
